Designer Bob Mackie recently donated a costume from Burnett’s 1970s musical comedy show to the Museum’s collections. The “curtain dress,” meant to parody the iconic green-velvet dress Scarlett O’Hara fashioned from drapes in the legendary film “Gone with the Wind,” was designed by Mackie and worn by Burnett in the comedy sketch “Went with the Wind.” Burnett descended a staircase in the dress, as Vivien Leigh did in the classic film, but Burnett did so with the drapes of her dress still attached to a brass-plated curtain rod balanced across her shoulders and a befringed valance refashioned as a hat atop her head.

I got the Jean Arthur biography by John Oller for Christmas. It’s a really good biography- very insightful. I highly recommend it. I never really site my favorite classic actor or actress- but Jean Arthur has always been one of my favorites. I find it interesting from the biography that she suffered from stage fright so severely. I always thought of her as quite outgoing- like she was in the many screwball comedies she made.
